How do I apply for a Social Security number
and card?
After the investor enters the US with the E2 visa, he or she may
apply for a Social Security Number. A Social Security number is
important because you need it to pay taxes, and many other businesses,
such as banks and credit companies, also ask for your number.
In general, only foreign citizens who have permission to work such
as an E2 visa may apply for a Social Security number. To apply for
a Social Security number:
• Complete an Application
for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5)
(The attached SS-5 form is in PDF file format. In case you do not
have an Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download the free software
from http://www.adobe.com,
so you can open the PDF file.)
• Gather the following original documents:
1. Valid Passport; and
2. Form I-94 card evidencing you were admitted to the US in E2
status. The I-94 card is a little white card issued to the foreign
national upon US entry by the Immigration Officer. The I-94 card
is normally stapled to the passport.
• Take your completed application and original documents
to the Social Security office nearest you.
The Social Security Office will mail your number and card after
they verify your documents with the US Department of Homeland Security.
